Chiropractic, Functional Neurology / Neuroplasticity within the Chiropractic profession
The subtle changes of the nervous system before they become more significant problems
Chiropractic
Chiropractic is a regulated health profession focused on the assessment and management of the spine, joints, muscles, and nervous system as they relate to movement and physical function. Chiropractors are trained to evaluate posture, mobility, coordination, and musculoskeletal mechanics, and may use hands-on techniques, joint mobilisation, soft tissue methods, and exercise guidance to support normal movement patterns. Chiropractic care is centred on promoting musculoskeletal health and functional performance within the practitioner’s scope of registration. It does not replace medical diagnosis or specialist care, and individuals experiencing significant or persistent symptoms should consult their general practitioner or relevant healthcare provider.
The role of Functional Neurology
Functional neurology within chiropractic is an approach that focuses on the relationship between the nervous system, movement, sensory input, and overall functional performance. It involves detailed assessment of balance, coordination, eye movements, posture, and other neurological indicators to better understand how different parts of the nervous system are interacting. Chiropractors who incorporate functional neurology use targeted, non-invasive strategies—such as movement-based exercises, sensory stimulation, and manual care—to support normal neurological function and adaptability. This approach is intended to complement standard chiropractic practice and is provided within the practitioner’s scope of registration. It does not replace medical diagnosis or specialist neurological care, and individuals with medical concerns should consult their doctor.
Neural Organization Technique (NOT)
Neuro-Organisational Technique (NOT) is a structured assessment
approach used by some chiropractors to explore how sensory input,
movement patterns, and nervous system responses may interact. It involves observing posture, coordination, reflex responses, and muscle activation patterns to better understand functional relationships within the body. Practitioners may apply gentle manual contacts and guided positioning as part of this process, with the aim of supporting neuromusculoskeletal function.
NOT is provided within the practitioner’s professional scope and is intended to complement standard care. It does not replace medical diagnosis or treatment, and individuals with major health concerns should consult their medical practitioner.
